a grand day out
Thanks for all your good wishes, you guys. We had a lovely day.
Fenway Park has always been my favorite ballpark. It's really one of my favorite places, period. And although I watch or listen to a baseball game almost every day, because I no longer enjoy going to Yankee Stadium, I haven't actually attended a baseball game all season. I miss it! When I walk up those steps and see that brilliantly green grass, and that crazy green wall, I feel pure joy.
The weather was beautiful - hot, but not humid, and breezy - we had excellent seats behind the Red Sox dugout, and the Sox breezed to a win. To cap it off, Allan surprised me with this:
Cool, huh? (In case you can't read it, it says "The Red Sox wish a Happy 20th Anniversary to Allan Wood and Laura Kaminker".)
It's funny, I never thought that celebrating the day we met was unusual, but judging from yesterday's comments, I guess it is. As I've mentioned in other contexts, we don't celebrate any of the standard holidays. No Christmas, no Chanukah or Passover, and we barely acknowledge national holidays like Memorial Day and 4th of July - except by getting extra hours at work. We're completely areligious, so we haven't substituted any Pagan rituals, as I know some people do. Instead, we have the four Major Holidays of the Kaminker-Wood household: two birthdays, the anniversary of the day we met, and the anniversary of our domestic partnership. Something tells me we're about to add a fifth. You can guess what it is.
Now, with two days left until my final deadline, I will forego posting about the larger world, and selfishly concentrate on my own. Take care, all - see you soon.

Glad you had a grand day out. :) SkyDome isn't nearly as cozy a ballpark as Fenway, unfortunately, or even the old Toronto Exhibition Stadium (where the Blue Jays played their first ever game in the snow), but you can catch some good baseball there.
ReplyDeleteWe've been to a few games at Skydome/Rogers Centre. In fact, our first visit to Toronto was timed for when the Red Sox were in town. Turf and a roof aren't ideal, but the fact that Toronto has American League East baseball was a major factor in our decision to move there. I'm serious!
ReplyDeleteHow funny. While you were in Boston, I was watching Mystic River. If you haven't seen it, it takes place in Boston, so I was in Boston in spirit :) Sean Penn's awesome performance, closely matched by his role in Dead Man Walking.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your deadline.
I try to avoid referring to the SkyDome as the Rogers Centre... Ted Rogers is not one of our favourite people (my wife used to work for Rogers Cable). :)
ReplyDeleteIt's nice when the roof's open, though. Unfortunately, it's been a long time since I've attended a game the Jays won... My showing up seems to put them off their game.
Wow - what a sweet thing Allan had them do for you guys!!! Must have been spine-tingling!
ReplyDeleteIt was really great. He told me in advance, so we could have the camera ready. When it came up, we were so excited we almost panicked and missed the shot. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy belated congratulations - my computer at home has been basically crippled the last little while. Sigh. That, or fate just doesn't want me to post the Toronto song for you...
ReplyDelete"Since you're new around here, you might not know that I was a diehard Yankees fan for nearly 30 years."
ReplyDeleteI'd figured it out -- it wasn't that subtly hidden. ;)

My SO & I haven't ever done that sort of thing, but somewhere I have a photo of the two of us on the Jumbotron Kiss Cam -- me kissing her while aiming my camera at the Jumbotron camera. ;)

ReplyDeleteThe Toronto song...?

Uh-oh. I guess I'm further out of the closet than I thought. ;-)

Very cool!

ReplyDeleteBTW, since you pointed me at the "Now It Can Be Told" story, I threw in some comments from a casual Toronto fan's PoV.

ReplyDeleteI replied at that post. :)
I have blogger set so comments are emailed to me.
It's funny...the only MLB games I've ever been to have been watching the Blue Jays in Toronto and watching the Red Sox lose about 15 times at Fenway. Every damn field trip we went on in NH involved going to Boston, to Fenway, watching the Sox lose, and then watching the drunk fans spill out onto the street, breaking out into fights, and throwing beer cans at our bus as it pulled away...sigh...good times.
ReplyDeleteoh, yeah, Congrats on the big anniversary!
ReplyDeletemay you have many more.

ReplyDeleteI remember you once mentioned having less than fond memories of Fenway Park. Now I know why! The atmosphere there has improved considerably. Still, couldn't the school think of any other place for a field trip? Geez.
The Toronto song...?
ReplyDeleteOh yes. But I'll wait for the next suitably themed post.
Ooo, very mysterious...
